This is the essential Music Together® class, one that a child can attend from BIRTH THROUGH AGE FIVE—and through all nine song collections which all together contain over 200 songs! Child development researchers recommend mixed-age groupings because they foster natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones and being classroom helpers; and adults are happy because the children in the family can attend class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching and exploring instruments. The class provides a variety of adult-child activities that are fun and offer new ways to play musically at home. Grandparents, nannies, Moms, and Dads individually or together may accompany the children. The whole family is welcome for this awesome music-making experience!

We know that 5-8 YEAR OLDS are capable of so much more than their younger counterparts in the mixed age classes, but we also understand that PLAY is still a vital and important way for these children to learn. A newly piloted program RHYTHM KIDS Level 2 is an exciting music, movement and drumming class for children in kindergarten through second grade (ages 5-8). Children integrate an assimilate rhythm into their lives as they learn multicultural drumming patterns, develop advanced repertoire on percussion instruments, explore movement and dance while singing songs and playing fun games based on music and drumming. It will be replacing our BIG KIDS offering. Rhythm Kids includes ALL NEW MUSIC with international music influences including playing djembe drums regularly in class. It's fun, energetic and perfect for your 5-8 year old.
Children of this age are ready for more independence in the classroom, so parent attendance in each RHYTHM KIDS class is welcome but not required. Guided by take home materials, the entire family can continue the fun and learning at home and you can stay connected with what your child is learning in class. On her own in class your child will build life skills like leadership, decision-making and teamwork at the same time as she builds her music skills.
FAQ: RHYTHM KIDS
WHAT is Rhythm Kids?
In it's third pilot year, Bebop & Bundles is thrilled to be a part of the developmental stage of this international music program for K-2nd graders! The creator of Music Together Rhythm Kids is drummer and Music Together teacher Tom Foote. Music Director Founder/Artistic Director Ken Guilmarten also was a huge part of it's inception and development. RK is currently in the final stages of finishing out the recording of the collection of songs--this fall we will feature the KANGAROO collection.
As a parent, you may be making choices about extracurricular activities that complement his new school experiences and support their growth---in music and in life. The Music Together RHYTHM KIDS program helps your child take the next step in music development by blending the elements of Music Together that parents and children love with new activities, music, drumming skills and challenges that are developmentally appropriate for 5-8 year old children.
WILL YOU TEACH MY CHILD TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT?
No, not in the way we think you mean. We will focus primarily on drumming and vocal instruction in class. Formal instrumental lesson in piano guitar, voice or another instrument tend to focus on the mechanics of playing that particular instrument without paying particular attention to the innate musicality that is the key to fine musicianship. Success with this varies tremendously with this age group for a number of reasons, the greatest being that a child is often times, simply not ready for the rigors of practice, focus, and commitment that learning to play an instrument entails. Frustration often ensues and lesson are often dropped and interest in music wanes as a result. In Music Together RHYTHM KIDS we focus on your child's primary music instrument--his or her own voice and body!
WHAT ACTIVITIES WILL YOU DO IN CLASS?
By introducing developmentally appropriate activities such as drumming skills, instrumental solos and ensembles, choreography, harmony singing, and vocal development, your child will gain fluency in the language of music, which will lay the groundwork for successful formal training, should you choose to take that path. Programs that have been offering RK around the US have praised it's ability to encourage children's participation in class. Children that may have been quiet participators in the past come out of their shells to engage enthusiastically and energetically.
WHAT IF MY CHILD IS ALREADY TAKING INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS?
Rhythm Kids can be a wonderful accompaniment to lessons. The play that your child will do in Rhythm Kids will strengthen her musical skills in different ways than lessons will, by allowing her to express in her voice and body the rhythms and melodies that she hasn't yet mastered on her instrument.
